June 2013 The Government of Alberta suspended the Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP) as part of Budget 2013. In response, the InterCity Forum on Social Policy (ICFSP) administered a survey to gauge the impact that the elimination of STEP would have on organizations in municipalities across Alberta. This document provides an executive summary, an analysis of the survey results, and a copy of the questionnaire that was completed by participating organizations. |

The Edmonton Social Planning Council (ESPC) was approached by the Edmonton Coalition on Housing and Homelessness (ECOHH) to undertake a research project involving an in-depth examination of housing retention challenges. Several community organizations are concerned about clients who were successfully housed, but later returned to homelessness, and the recurring need to find new accommodation for these clients. This outcome uses valuable resources that could otherwise be dedicated to serving new people in their programs. The time and resources required for re-housing makes the goal of ending chronic homelessness in 10 years more difficult to achieve. |

Achieving the Promise: Ending Poverty in Alberta 
The Edmonton Social Planning Council, the Alberta College of Social Workers, and Public Interest Alberta released a new report Achieving the Promise: Ending Poverty in Alberta revealing the latest available data that 91,000 Alberta children (under age 18) lived in poverty (Statistics Canada's low-income measure, after-tax) in 2010. The document also highlights other poverty indicators, and offers solutions to alleviating poverty in Alberta.
