An interesting Stats Can report was released recently. It looks at neighborhood crime levels in Edmonton, Halifax and Thunder Bay.
Not surprisingly, the study shows a strong correlation between crime rates and the income levels of neighborhoods, with crime rates being significantly higher in lower income neigborhoods. Another correlation is that crime rates in all 3 cities are generally higher the closer neighborhoods are to the city centre.
As someone who has lived in a lower income inner city neighborhood, I do get concerned that these kind of studies can lead to unwarranted concerns about the safety of inner city neighborhoods. That's because most crime - especially serious crime - is not a random act, but is committed between perpetrators and victims who are known to each other.
The Stats Can report has lots of interesting charts and maps. If you're interested in taking a look, you can link to it below.
