An census update is in order! With Christmas just around the corner, Canadians have put the long form census on their wishlist.
Armine Yalnizyan, senior economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, has recently explained why economists should care about the data they'll lose without a long form census (see Economists unite. You have nothing to lose but data, Globe and Mail, December 8, 2010).
We gave our own update on the census in our fall fACTivist newsletter. If you havent read it yet, check out Issue Update: Long Form Census. Weve been talking locally with politicians and other organizations to
make sure everyone realizes how important it is that the Government of
Canada reverse its decision.
The Canadian Council on Social Development,
in partnership with several other organizations across Canada, has
launched a legal challenge in the Federal Court regarding the long form
census. Their media release explains
the motivation for this: a voluntarysurvey census will provide under
representation of the needs of marginalized communities, and data gained
from a voluntary survey will not be adequate for the planning needs of
service providers.
Savethecensus.ca has been launched online to share information and resources about the
fight to re-instate the long form census. Their email newsletter gives
the opportunity to stay informed about the latest census developments. If you havent already, sign up for their newsletter here.
