The ESPC’s most recent projects have primarily focused on social and economic challenges that workers and families are facing in Alberta.

Current Projects

Youth Internship

Lead: Jennifer Hoyer

The ESPC Youth Internship facilitates the work of creative young activists in the community. Interns develop a project proposal, workplan, learning outcomes, and project outcomes in partnership with ESPC staff, and benefit from mentorship and other in-kind resources to put their ideas into action.

The Youth Gang Alternatives Project, our summer 2009 internship, resulted in the YouthGAP report.  Download your free copy of the report here.

Our spring 2010 intern Tiffany Seymour is completed a report on anti-bullying programs in Alberta.  Download your free copy of "Bullying in Alberta: Suggestions for the Future" here.

Tracking the Trends 2009

Leads: Anette Kinley & John Kolkman

The ESPC updated its flagship publication, Tracking the Trends, in 2009.  The publication includes a variety of historical and current data on demographic and socioeconomic trends in the Edmonton area.

Wood Buffalo Regional Municipality Social Plan

Lead: Susan Morrissey

The ESPC is working in partnership with the Social Planning and Research Council of BC (SPARC BC), Applications Management Consulting (Edmonton) and David Thompson Consulting (Edmonton), to produce a social plan for the Wood Buffalo Regional Municipality.

Alberta Child Poverty Report Card

Lead: John Kolkman

The ESPC produced an updated child poverty report in partnership with Public Interest Alberta, and with support from Campaign 2000. The report, titled We Can Do Better, was released on November 21, 2008.  A follow up to this report, We Must Do Better, was released in November 2009.

Funding for the report was provided by the Muttart Foundation.

The ESPC and PIA visited five Alberta cities (Red Deer, Ft. McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat) this Spring to help build public support for Alberta to adopt a comprehensive poverty reduction strategy.  This will be followed up by public forums in Calgary and Edmonton this October.   Visit PIA's website for more information & to register.

The previous child pverty report for Alberta was published as a fact sheet by the ESPC in 2004.

Research Needs - Community Consultations

Lead: Erin Krekoski, Jennifer Hoyer

The ESPC hosted consultations with a number of community partners to help us align our social research agenda with the needs of agencies and organizations working in the community. The consultations included focus groups and surveys, and will shape the ESPC's Strategic Plan moving forward.

The report, Community Consultations on Research Needs: Final Report(October 2008), and Nonprofits and Policy Advocacy: Learning from Success (July 2009), are available for download. Stay tuned for further developments as the project moves forward.
