Executive Director of the Edmonton Social Planning Council says the financial increase to Albertans with disabilities is long overdue.

Premier Alison Redford kept her promise to increase Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) to $1,588 per month from $1,188.

Aside from increasing AISH monthly payments by $400, those same individuals are now eligible to earn $800 each month instead of $400.

Susan Morrissey says the increase is not just about the money.

"It certainly helps with day-to-day bills but also I think it's the bigger psychological issue there around the fact that people have some intensive to go out to work," says Morrissey. "(AISH recipients) want to be able to contribute to their community."
